Cairo, Egypt - 1997

The land of the pharoahs

The bustling city comes right up to the entrance to the pyramids although this is not apparent from this photo nor from most of the photos taken by visitors.  When you stand at the base of one of the pyramids or near the Sphinx (which was being rebuilt in 1997), and you look back at the entrance, you can see the modern (but sand-covered) city crowding up to the edge of this historic site.

The pyramids were impressive as the sun set behind them.
Sunset comes hard and fast in the tropics - usually around 6:30 PM.  This picture (complete with laser projection onto a wall near the Sphinx) was taken part way through the "sound and light" show that is put on every evening.
