Caribou Antler Marble Baleen 8" X 7" X 7" 2000

My class and I participated in an exchange this year, and this was a gift for the three teachers that were involved at the other end. They came to visit us first, and we truly exchanged many ideas and experiences, inspiring me to make this piece which I gave to them on our subsequent visit.

I wanted to make something for each of them, but that would also come together as one sculpture for our common experience. In order to do this, I first broke the stone that was to become the base into three parts, so that they would fit together perfectly once it was completed. Then I worked on carving the figures and placing them so that when joined together, each touched another with the baleen to represent the exchange.
