Caribou Antler
Serpentine (Danville, QC)
Pyrophillite (Newfoundland)
Dolomite (Newfoundland)

Black Marble (Chimborazo, Ecuador)

9" X 9" X 10"
2008

The idea for this sculpture began with the materials themselves, then developed over time. At some point, years ago, I noticed this wedge-shaped piece of serpentine, and thought it would create an interesting effect to fit it on this antler base with the thin point down. Then the relatively smooth, flat surfaces of the opposing sides suggested the framework for faces to me. In the end, I tried to capture the unity of youth and age, and the beauty of being full of life at both ends of the spectrum.
