Soapstone (Newfoundland)
Dolomite (Newfoundland)
8.5" X 5.5" X 5"
2002

I often use plastecine to make models of my sculptures before carving them in stone, and this one was the result of my son playing along with me. When he was three, he flattened a piece of fimo (modelling clay), twisted it around, and stood it on it's end. I immediately saw the form of a mother, added a little piece for the baby   (with my son's permission), and the idea was born.

It took me a couple of years to get around to making it, but I knew it was time when I noticed this particular piece of Newfoundland soapstone fit the shape I wanted perfectly. The simplicity and gentleness of this piece seems to appeal to many, and I've been asked to make a couple of smaller variations of this sculpture, which you can see by clicking on the link below the picture.
