Peggy White (www.peggywhite.ca)
and White Wing Music, of Almonte, are proud to announce the release of Peggy
White’s new CD "Fair is
Fair". A veteran
performer, this is Peggy’s first full-length album.
Peggy’s rich voice and her accompanying acoustic guitar shimmer in front of a carefully layered back drop of acoustic instruments and supporting harmony vocals. Drums, bass, additional guitars, and the occasional sounds of fiddle, mandolin, dulcimer, dobro, lap steel, B3 organ, or Turkish saz, each with their own texture, take their place and add their colorings without ever being overpowering. The backing harmony vocals add a dynamic intensity.
The songwriting on “Fair is Fair” is particularly strong. Each of the twelve songs is well crafted. The music is written and performed by Peggy White; her long time writing partner, Gene Bruce, provides thoughtful and intelligent lyrics.
The contributing musicians are a who’s who list of Canadian roots music industry professionals today. From the more traditional to cutting edge, each brings their individual strengths to give this CD a beautiful musical presentation. A partial list includes: veteran drummers, Ottawa’s Miche Pouliot (Natalie McMaster, k.d. lang, Bruce Cockburn) and Craig Bignell (Susan Aglukark, Amy Sky, Frank Mills, George Fox); bassist, Andrew Affleck (Susan Aglukark, George Fox); vocalists: Tod Gorr (Steel Rail) and Toronto songwriter, Greg Hobbs; and multi-instrumentalists: local favorite, Terry Tufts and Dave Clarke (Steel Rail, David Francey).
“Fair is Fair” was produced by Gerry Griffin (www.thexrayz.com/renegade.htm), a Ottawa-based veteran musician and singer-songwriter. His production and sense of instrumental arrangement were a perfect addition to this project. The CD was recorded at Griffin’s Renegade Music; Knot Studios, owned and operated by Chris Shreenan-Dyck (Lucie Idlout, Hennessey); and at Marnie’s Diner, in Almonte, owned and operated by Ken Friesen (Head studio engineer at the Tragically Hip’s Bathouse and sound engineer on the road for Moist’s David Usher) and was mixed and mastered at Marnie’s Diner.
It is a world-class product:
“Americana” in genre. The music
is roots based, with a “folksy” feel, a “blues’ groove”, a country flavor and a
rock edge. It will, very soon, make
Ottawa proud on both national and international stages.
The first reviews:
“I have a great many CDs come across my desk; this one is good.” …. “Affectionately and sensitively produced by Gerry Griffin.”
Chopper McKinnon, CKCU Radio Host
“Peggy White’s new CD, “Fair is Fair” is a gem; warm vocals, great lyrics and terrific production all come together in this disc.”
Rob Riendeau, The Humm, Almonte
