The objectives of this project were to construct an equal-area geo-referenced sampling grid for Canada, to digitise
available range maps for common
and COSEWIC species in Canada and to identify important sites for biodiversity
within Canada using a new statistical predictor of conservation value.

Considerable attention has been focused on the conservation and management of biodiversity in Canada, particularly
since the Convention on
Biological Diversity was signed in 1993. Recent international scientific review clearly indicates
that human induced stresses threaten biodiversity and
functioning of ecosystems. There is emphasise on the need to
assess the status of biodiversity, its economic benefits and the causes and consequences of changes.
