Rod Gent in the U.K. is conducting a one-name study of the GENT name. With his permission, more details of his work may be viewed.
To date, I have researched the GENT family back to the mid-eighteenth century. The earliest records show my ancestor George marrying in County Durham. He was born c1728, based on his age at death, and married Mary COLLING; four children have been 'located' but there may be others. Details of his descendants can be found on the chart below (my direct line of descent is bolded).

I have been fortunate to make great strides with the HOPKINS/ROBINSON family of Heyshott and, in the process, met a handful of dedicated individuals researching the same large clan. We stay in touch, and update each other on findings. I was also lucky in 'meeting' a descendant of the SAVAGEs who is trying to establish the family's early seventeenth-century history in Hampshire. And in 2005 a brick wall tumbled down and I'm now corresponding with several CUNNINGHAM descendants.
I am working on the story of my Gent ancestry when time permits. I began it
with the intention of getting it to print as a "millenium project" but here
I am, still not finished. The problem with family history is the minute you
think you've finished researching, another bud appears on a branch of the family tree!

My great grandmother Annie Rodman PARKER GENT was the daughter of Scottish Ann RODMAN by her Irish husband John Ferguson PARKER. The associated surnames of FERGUSON, NEIL(L), BLACK, and McMEEKIN are also being researched.
My great great grandmother Mary Ann STEPHENSON GENT was the daughter of Susannah JOHNSON by her husband William STEPHENSON. I've recently traced the Stephensons back to mid-18th century Edmonbyers, in County Durham, and I'm now investigating the affiliated surnames of GIBSON, BURROW, JOBLING, CLOUGH, and PATTERSON.
My three times great grandmother was Elizabeth SPOOR/S GENT (the spelling varies) who was the daughter of Ann MOULD by her coalminer husband William SPOOR. I have details surrounding the SPOOR family of Whickham, County Durham, going back four generations from Elizabeth. The surnames SMITH, EBDON and GIBSON tie into this line.
My four times great grandmother Elizabeth BELL GENT was born sixth of the ten children of William and Ann BELL. I know the names of Elizabeth's siblings and the years they were born but nothing else. With BELL such a common name, it's not likely this stumbling block will be easily moved aside.
