JOSEPH HILL

‘Behold the Land’ (7” single on Coxsone label, also on Heartbeat album ‘Full Up: The Best of Studio One – Volume 2'). 'Full Up' was reissued on CD by HEARTBEAT in 2006 as 'Full Up: More Hits From Studio One'.

‘Behold’ (released as 12” single on Studio One label)

‘Take Me Girl’ (another Studio One vocal cut – on Heartbeat CD ‘Soul Defenders at Studio One’).   It is worth pointing out that Hill also worked as a backing vocalist and percussionist with the Soul Defenders in the early 1970s.  He sang harmony on Freddie McKay’s ‘Picture on the Wall’ album, and played percussion for numerous Studio One recordings - including tracks by Burning Spear and Dennis Brown.  The 'Soul Defenders at Studio One' (Heartbeat, 1992) is essential for anyone who wants to explore the roots reggae, or the roots of Culture. It contains many wonderful performances, including a number of top notch instrumentals. Many Soul Defenders backing tracks can also be found on Cedric Brooks' album 'Im Flash Forward' (Studio One). There are two songs that feature Soul Defenders backing on the CD 'Collector's Edition: Rare Reggae From the Vaults of Studio One' (Heartbeat, 1989). An additional Soul Defenders instrumental (as well as further work by Cedric Brooks) can be found on the compilation titled 'Studio One Scorcher' (Soul Jazz, 2002).

The 2006 reissue of 'Downbeat The Ruler: Killer Instrumentals from Studio One' (Heartbeat) contains the extremely rare instrumental 'Popcorn Reggae'.

ALBERT WALKER

During the temporary Culture split in the early 1980s, Albert Walker and Kenneth Dayes recorded a handful of songs for a 'clash' (one artist per side) style album with Don Carlos. The album, titled 'Roots & Culture' (Jah Guidance), has five songs that feature Albert singing lead vocals, and Kenneth singing harmony. The lp was produced by early dancehall producer Henry 'Junjo' Lawes. Both the Walker/Dayes side, and the Don Carlos side offer some good material of the early 80s, Roots Radics, variety. Following the passing of Junjo, Linval Thompson began distributing his back catalog, and in 2003, he issued Albert's 'Come Jah People' (Thompson Sound) on a 7" single.

The 'Roots & Culture' album was released for the first time on CD by VP Records in 2007 - as part of the 'Reggae Rewind' series. For more information:
