MBA Degree Awarded
While on a transfer of work to Ontario at the University of Guelph,
Dr. Paul McCaughey successfully completed his requirements for the
Master of Business Administration degree in Agribusiness. He returned to
his position as research scientist in beef pasture management at Brandon
Research Centre effective September 4, 2001. His MBA studies focussed on
a broad range of topics related to agribusiness, such as management
accounting, marketing, corporate finance, statistics, human resources,
futures and options, equity markets, managerial economics, strategic
management, operations management, business law, and the Canadian
Securities Course. He will be applying the knowledge he acquired over
the last year to develop an economic analysis of beef production systems
in the Aspen Parkland.

Fraser Valley Fields Yield Scientific Prize
Dr. Bob Vernon, Entomologist at the Pacific Agri-Food Research
Centre is one of the winners of the Science Council of British Columbia
Science Awards in the category of "Solutions Through
Research". The award, which will be presented at a banquet at the
Vancouver Hotel on Monday, October 29th, recognizes his contributions
towards developing and implementing Integrated Pest Management programs
in vegetable crops over the past 25 years. A photo and an accompanying
article about Dr. Vernon's career was printed in the Vancouver Sun on
Thursday, September 20th when the award winners were announced.

APEX Award 2001 5NR Communications Working Group
A publication produced by the Strategic Promotion Team for the 5NR
Communications Working Group has recently received an APEX 2001 award. Earth
Tones... The Book won in the category "Education and
Information Brochures" and was one of 41 winning Canadian entries.
The APEX annual award recognizes excellence in graphic design, editorial
content and the ability to achieve overall communications goals by
professional communicators in North America.
Earth Tones... The Book is a companion publication to the Earth
Tones television series broadcast on Discovery's flagship science news
magazine @discovery.ca. Both the book and the television series
feature government scientists at work and demonstrate the many ways
federal researchers are tackling environmental issues that affect the
quality of life for Canadians.
The APEX award attests to the high-quality collaborative work
involving communications and policy professionals from the 5 departments
dealing with natural resources to promote and communicate federal
science to Canadians.
