SENTENCING CONSULTATION
- Preparation of sentencing evaluations and parole plans for the prison-bound offender. In effect, this provides the client and his or her family with a second opinion about the advisability of long-term imprisonment and whether other options exist in the community.
These reports can take the form of an affidavit, sentencing memorandum, or bound report with exhibits attached.
Often, these reports are filed with the Court as evidence to be addressed by the sentencing tribunal.
- EXPERT TESTIMONY
- In conjunction with the above, I am often asked to provide viva-voce testimony in court before the judge and both the attorney for the client as well as the Crown Prosecutor/District Attorney. This gives everyone an opportunity to ask questions about my final report, and debate the merits of my recommendations.
As noted in my Biography, I have been previously qualified as an expert in the field of sentencing and parole.
- LEGAL BRIEFS
- In a limited number of circumstances, I have been asked to prepare research summaries for attorneys who wished to address an issue before the Court. These briefs usually take the form of a sworn affidavit, and have concerned issues such as sex offenders and general deterence, incarcerating young offenders, and the research literature on bail.
- SEMINARS AND TRAINING
- Teaching has always been an interest of mine, and I have often been called upon to address criminal justice conferences, or act as a trainer on the subject of sentencing alternatives.
- RESEARCH
- Finally, I have performed research under contract for both non-profit organizations as well as the government. Some of this research can be accessed from my Library.
