How do I know how many visits my pets should have per day? We have found that the number of visits your pet needs, depends on the amount of time you will be gone. For a weekend getaway or just a few days, some non-active pets who are used to spending a lot of time alone, can be happy with a morning and evening visit. (Exception would be if a dog must be crated, crating in excess of 8 hours is not good for a dog.) For long trips of five days or more, it is our experience that after a few long nights alone, two visits just isn't enough human contact for a dog. The third visit makes all the difference. An extra walk and extra attention and playtime. For cats, one visit per day is fine. We will no longer sit cats on a one visit every second day basis. This policy is firm. Aside from the obvious health risk, we have found the cats are too lonely and desperate for human contact. Remember that while your cat may seem very independent, they are aware that you are there and are used to interacting with you daily. For them to be left totally alone for longer than 24 hours is not normal for them and they become unduly stressed. It's heartbreaking to close the door on a lonely cat who will wait 48 hrs...until the next time. For cats on medications or that need more attention and care--see our new cattery! |
