Map Drawing with Ocad

The very first map that I drew was at Summer Survey School for first year Engineering at McGill University in 1947. It was drawn in ink from original survey notes for part of a small town near Montreal.

The next map that I drew was a small map for the sport of Orienteering. This was around 1970 and was started with the encouragement and help from a visiting Norwegian Orienteer, Helge Bovim.

Since that time, many maps have been drawn mostly for the sport of Orienteering. Since the time when we retired in 1982, most of the maps drawn have been a team effort of Pat and Dick. We have done the field work and the drawings for maps in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Alberta and at Whitehorse in the Yukon. The first maps were drawn with pen and ink and during the last few years with the computer and using programs such as Ocad by Hans Steinegger from Switzerland. A demo version of Ocad 7 may be downloaded from the Ocad Web Site. A full version of Ocad 6 is now available free from the Ocad Web Site. http://www.ocad.com

The Riviere La Peche map which was drawn for the 1996 Canadian Orienteering Championships received an Award of Excellence in the Recreation Class at the 1999 World Cartographic Exhibition held in Ottawa.

The collection of all the maps that Pat and Dick de St. Croix have created or redrawn have been placed in a Portfolio of Maps and in 2005 the total number of maps is forty three.

The mapping team of Pat and Dick de St. Croix is available for Orienteering mapping contracts on the following basis.

  • Provide transportation cost from Ottawa to the map area.

  • Provide accomodation cost and transportation at the map site.

  • Map drawing in Ocad 8 at a rate of $15.00 per hour. Drawing time will be up to 10 hours per square kilometer.

  • Provide a base map created from adequate aerial photos.
