The ultimate ladder game
-by Flashblade

What constitutes the ultimate ladder game, you ask? Well in this case it's an 8 player FFA on Green Valleys (ladder ver.)

It was right after the 1.03 patch came out so all the ladder maps had been changed. I didn't know any of the maps, except one: Green Valleys. So I went on Battle.Net and tried to find a cool game. I finnaly found one that piqued my interest: 8 player FFA.

Now if you've ever tried to get a game like that going then you know how long it usually takes for it to get started... but eventually after rehosting 3-4 times the game got rolling.

The players were: Me, isucku: Toss@1:30, Zone0083 Terran@10:30, Lion-8 Terran@4:30, ~Massacre~ Terran@12:00, Angel_nsync Terran@3:00, Flaming_Goat Terran@9:00 and _Pericles Toss@6:00. I chose random and ended up with Zerg at 7:30.

Zone dropped right off the bat and it was down to a 7 player game.

Betting that no one would be rushing I built only drones until my 2nd hatch was done. I upgraded to lair, got burrowing and then sent out 8 'lings to burrow at the entrance to each base. Then I got my den and got 20-25 Hydras' guarding my base.

The entire time most of the people were bitching at each other and asking stupid lamer questions like "is anyone attacking yet?". Only a couple kept their mouths shut... I knew those would be the most dangerous of the bunch.

I finnaly decided on a strat: all air. I expanded to the 7:30 gas and the spot right above my base so I had 3 geysers going strong. I started pumping out the muties hardcore, got 12 and went over to 6:00 and whooped _Pericles_. He didn't even stand a chance. The first kill was mine.

Looking for my next kill I scouted 9:00 and 4:30 finding 2 terrans scared me a bit so I got the armor upgrade for my muties. But I had 36 muties so I sent them all to 4:30. I came upon a bunch of wraiths, towers and bunkers. I obviously couldn't take the heat and high tailed it out of there... but was amazed to find out i'd only lost 6 or so muties. Then it hit me... if 1 armor upgrade could add so much more staying power to my muties what could 3 do?

I quickly began upagrading my muties armor ... and noticed I was almost out of minerals. Cursing to myself I expanded to the spots on the cliffs' beside my base. Then white (who was at 9:00) got ambitious and started hitting at the base I'd just made on the cliffs between our bases. Seeing as I had about 48 muties with armor 2 armor upgrades. I decided to attack.

The first thing I saw was a bunch of towers and bunkers, in my head I was sure it was over for me. But to my suprise my muties tore through his ENTIRE base! We must have both been stunned and Flaming_Goat was eliminated. 2 down, 5 to go :)

Of the remaining 4 ~Massacre~ was one of the ones who had been silent the entire game, so I scouted out his base at 12 and sure enough he had a whole pack of wraiths. But during this time Angel_nsync was telling everyone that Lion was going down. So seeing as ~Massacre~ was so strong I decided to go pick on Lion.

By now I was maxed at 200 units and had approximatly 60-70 muties. I don't know what Angel was talking about but yellow had ALL his forces intact. But it didn't matter, I walked through all 3 of his bases. Unfortunately I didn't find his final few building I decided he was dead stopped searching.

Then it happened ~Massacre~ hit my main base with a bunch of wraiths. Taking out my spire and some overlords before I could rush back to kick him out. Sooo I had to take the next little while to rebuild my spire and overlords.

Fortunately his silentness paid off and the remaining players never got wise to my plight. I got my spire back up ... this time hidden away in one of my expansions and prepared to go on the offensive once again. I got back up to unit max and moved on ~Massacre~.

Unfortunately at the same time as I sent my attack on his base he sent 50 or so marines at mine. Hoping that he'd run back to his base I continued my attack, unfortunately he didn't and we destroyed each others' bases. But since I had my spire at one of my expansions I wasn't worried as I could keep on building.

What I forgot about was that 2 of my gas mine we're in my main base. So my gas income dropped to near zero (I had one depleted geyser). So I through a bunch of drones all over the map and got 3 more geysers to keep me going. I got up to unit max again and started thinking about my next target.

Most of the game I had been getting 'Nuclear launch detected' messages so I didn't worry to much when I heard another one. I quickly checked my main bases and presumed it wasn't aimed at me. Then a nuke droped right in the middle of my 70 muties. I couldn't believe my eyes as 5/7 of my army was blown away.... and Lion laughed.

Cursing myself for not finishing off yellow earlier I retreated back to my base(s) to rebuild.

Then Angel left! ... and Lion laughed. I couldn't believe it... he had come back from the dead. I did a quick check to see how many player were left and found that isucku had left sometime during my fight with ~Massacre~. Only Lion and I remained!

There was hope once again. I was up to unit max real quick due to my incredible ammounts of ressources. So I started bringing the fight back to Lion. He didn't offer much resistance as I went through his first base... but he wasn't dead yet.

So I scouted all over the map and found a 2nd base, and a 3rd. I wiped both out... but he still wasn't dead! Then I found his final base. It consisted of a command center and engineering bay and 50 or so towers. Knowing my muties probably wouldn't quite make it through that, so I morphed 24 of them into Guardians and walked through his final base :)

And there you have it folks... the ultimate ladder game :)
