Birds,
Blooms and Bugs
2 to 5 days,
All Levels
Using needle and thread like a paintbrush, learn to hand embroider a study of
your choice on either a cream or black background. Students will learn how to
do radial stitching, long and short stitch techniques and other approaches to
blending threads and colours. We will look at the different thread choices and
their attributes. If your experience in this type of embroidery is limited, a
simple study should be chosen to begin. Those with more advanced abilities can
chose a more complex subject with lots of curves and detail, such as birds and
orchids. Students can work with cotton flosses, silks or wools. I will provide
some of each for experimentation. The first day and a half is spent learning
all of the thread painting techniques. On the second afternoon we will look at
each of your images and determine which technique is most suitable and which
threads you might like to execute the image in. Three days allows you to work
out more of the technical challenges. Four to five days allows completion and
guidance throughout plus focus on other subjects and their challenges.
